The Alice Springs mouse was once thought to be extinct until it was discovered that the shark bay mouse is really the Alice Springs mouse. Currently the only known location of this species can be found on Bernier Island. There is a possibility that there are other locations where there is a population; however scientists have not been able to successfully locate any.
